About the book
Munch and Goldstein. Ardent Lines tells the story of the lifelong friendship between the world-famous Norwegian artist Edvard Munch and the now-forgotten Danish poet Emanuel Goldstein. The two artists met in Paris in 1889, ushering in a rare relationship of mutual artistic inspiration and understanding that lasted right up to Goldstein’s death in 1921.
The book presents a unique private collection of Munch’s woodcuts, and three articles contributed by scholars of art and literature let Munch’s powerful and colourful art enter into a conversation with Goldstein’s fierce poems about love and lust. The roughly carved imagery offsets the forceful, yet also poignant tenor of the words. Through this interplay, the two modes of expression reinforce each other, making Munch’s and Goldstein’s feelings and relationships tangibly present to us.
