About the book
Women Artists in Denmark 1880-1910 shines a spotlight on a number of female artists’ contributions to the Danish art scene at the end of the nineteenth century. These artists broke with the norms of their day, and with notions of art as a male-dominated discipline. They revolutionised art, and their contributions during the period from 1880 to 1910 were integral to making art modern.
Featuring more than 100 artworks and never seen before works by female Danish artists from the period, this book examines the Modern Breakthrough through the works created by women artists. Women were a significant driving force in the Modern Breakthrough and the substantial changes that occurred scientifically, socially, and culturally in the final decades of the nineteenth century. The changes brought by modernity meant that more women had the opportunity to actively consider the relationship between the sexes, domestic life, and female identity. By looking collectively at an entire generation of women artists, this book offers new perspectives on the Modern Breakthrough itself and clarifies what it means to call these women ‘modern’.
The book is co-published in cooperation with Yale University Press.
